Walking into a tanning salon for the first time can feel a little intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. With a few first-time tanning tips and a slow, steady approach, you can build a base tan you feel good about.

Start by knowing your skin type

Before you ever step into a bed, the most important question is a simple one: how does your skin react to the sun? Some folks burn easily and tan slowly. Others rarely burn and deepen quickly. Most of us fall somewhere in between.

Knowing where you land matters because it shapes everything else, from which bed you start in to how often you come back. If you tend to burn after just a few minutes outside, you'll want to go gentler and slower. There's no rush, and good results come from patience, not intensity.

When you visit us, just tell us honestly how your skin behaves. We'll listen and help you find a safe starting point.

Why you start low and build gradually

Here's the heart of how to build a base tan: you start at a lower level and work your way up over time. Your skin needs to adjust. Pushing too hard, too fast is the fastest way to overdo it and end up red and uncomfortable, which is the opposite of what you want.

Building gradually gives your skin time to respond and develop color steadily. For tanning for beginners, think of it as a series of short, comfortable sessions rather than one long marathon. A base tan built slowly tends to look more even and last better, too.

What our 7 tanning bed levels mean

At Sun Bar, we offer seven levels of UV tanning, and understanding tanning bed levels helps you see why we don't put everyone in the same bed.

  • Lower levels are gentle and more forgiving, perfect for beginners or anyone with fair, sensitive skin just getting started.
  • Mid levels step up the intensity once your skin has adjusted and built a little base.
  • Higher levels are more high-intensity and best suited for experienced tanners who already have a solid base and want to maintain it efficiently in less time.

We have both lay-down and stand-up beds, all walk-in with no contracts, so you're free to move up at the pace that's right for you. There's no pressure to climb the levels faster than your skin is ready for.

Don't skip the eyewear or the lotion

Two things make a real difference, and beginners often overlook them.

Protective eyewear is a must. Your eyelids don't block UV well, so always wear proper goggles in the bed. Squeezing your eyes shut isn't enough. We'll make sure you have a pair every visit.

Quality tanning lotions and accelerators help, too. A good lotion keeps your skin hydrated and can help it tan more evenly. Dry skin reflects light and tans poorly, so a proper indoor tanning lotion is one of the easiest upgrades a first-timer can make. We're happy to walk you through the options.

How often should you tan?

A common beginner mistake is coming in too often, too soon. More sessions back-to-back won't speed things up; it just raises the chance of overdoing it.

A more realistic rhythm is to space your sessions out and give your skin a day to rest in between, especially early on. Steady and spaced out beats frequent and rushed every time. Results vary from person to person, so we'll help you settle into a frequency that fits your skin and your goals.

Common beginner mistakes to avoid

A few easy traps to sidestep:

  • Starting at too high a level before your skin is ready.
  • Tanning too frequently in the early days.
  • Skipping eyewear or lotion.
  • Trying to rush a base tan before vacation at the last minute.

That last one is worth a note. If you've got a trip coming up, give yourself a few weeks of gradual sessions rather than cramming. A base tan before vacation is meant to be a gentle head start, not a quick fix the day before you fly.

Have an event but no time? Try a spray tan

Sometimes you want color without UV at all, and that's perfectly fine. Our VersaSpa spray tan gives you a no-UV glow that's great for weddings, photos, or any event that sneaks up on you. It's a friendly option to have in your back pocket.
