The short answer

For most people, a spray tan lasts about 5 to 7 days before it starts to fade naturally. Results vary from person to person, and a lot of that comes down to your skin and how you care for it afterward.

Here's the science in plain terms. A sunless spray tan uses DHA, a color additive that reacts with the very top layer of your skin. There's no UV involved at all. Because your skin naturally sheds those outer cells over several days, your tan fades as that surface turns over. The better you protect that layer, the longer your color sticks around.

What affects how long it lasts

A few everyday things speed up fading or help it stick:

• Skin prep. Going in with clean, freshly exfoliated skin gives the color an even surface to grab onto.

• Pat dry, don't rub. After showering, gently pat your skin with a soft towel instead of rubbing.
• Skip long soaks. Avoid long baths, hot tubs, and lots of time in chlorinated pools, which all break color down faster.
• Go easy on your skin. No scrubbing, loofahs, or exfoliating until you're ready for the tan to go.
• Dress loose at first. Soft, loose clothing right after your session helps avoid rub-off.
